21st

I'm officially 21! Well, 21 & a few days old to be exact.
Being 21 only means I gotta be more mature than I already am (though sometimes I do behave like a kiddo) and be responsible for myself.

So how exactly did I celebrate my 21st? Nothing fanciful, just a simple affair with the family consisting of a dinner

followed by cake cutting at my grandparents' place. For me, a meal with my closed ones is enough. To each of his own I guess.

Speaking of my cake, I chose Swensen's Red Velvet with strawberry&lime sherbet (huge mistake, read on..) ice-cream flavours.

 Reasons being?

1) I've never once ordered an ice-cream cake for my birthday and so I thought it would quite make some sense if I did,

especially for the first time, for my 21st birthday. Most importantly, you can never go wrong with ice-cream cakes.

2) There is this ongoing PAssion card promotion (valid till 31Oct 2014) whereby I'm entitled to 15% off if I order a cake during my birthday month. No one EVER says NO to discounts. At least not for me. 1kg costs about $42 and I paid $38, which I felt was acceptable?

BUT.....

I would be lying if I said I wasn't a little disappointed by the "inside" of the cake. The cake layers at the top and bottom were pretty much

non-existent and it seemed to me that 80% of the cake was made up of ice-cream. Yes sure we're talking about ICE-CREAM CAKES here...
But I've tried the classic one with 3 ice-cream flavours and it tasted just perfect. Maybe it's just me..... Maybe it's the 2 vs 3 ice-cream flavours that made the difference.

My sister was telling me how adventurous I was to have picked lime sherbet, which I have to agree with her. What was I thinking?? I assumed that since strawberry is sweet, having lime sherbet would kinda balance the taste. But no... when my teeth sank into the latter, it perked me up instantly! It became the LIMELIGHT.

Overall, the presentation of the cake compensated for the flavour, but looks can be deceiving sometimes...
That aside, another plus point would have to be that the cake could serve up to 15pax from how mine was being cut.

I can safely say that I'm more of the traditional-cake-kinda person. Takeaway? Only pick the flavours that you're sure everyone would really enjoy eating a serving or even two. I'm not really a fussy person when it comes to food, so I'm pretty satisfied with the whole experience.

If you're a fan of novelty, then Swensen's could be the right choice. It's also ideal for kids too in my opinion!
